I have a magazine company. I sell print and digital magazines. I have my magazines listed in the Square store. Although each issue is set with a digital and print variation (because they come in two different formats that cost two different prices), I have each issue set as a Physical Item because I need the shipping charge to be automatically added at checkout.
Creating a separate Digital and Physical Item for each issue caused confusion for my customers. So I added the variation format - which helped, but, unfortunately, it caused a different problem when digital buyers noticed they were being charged a shipping fee. Plus, as a Digital Item, there's nowhere for me to upload the file, so my customers aren't able to download their issue after purchase.
I was told that the only workarounds for these situations are that I would have to either refund the shipping fee on every digital purchase or manually email digital customers their issue after they purchase it. That is a big inconvenience if I'm not able to do either at any given time.
SUMMED UP - My problems are:
(1) I need to avoid charging my customers a shipping fee if they choose the digital variation of a physical item
(2) I can't upload a digital file for my customers to download after their payment, although the "Change Item Type" page specifically says, "Digital - Lets you provide a digital file for download." [This feature worked perfectly with Weebly]
(3) I need to avoid appearing that I don’t care about my customers when/if I don’t refund or email purchases in ideal time
Is there a way for Square to correct these problems or add options to alleviate them? Thanks for your help

I have to answer to digital download after payment... now to stop charging the shipping fee i believe you have to make sure to change the type of item to digital itself. I will post Steps in a sec
Hello @theurbanemag ,
We appreciate your reaching out with this suggestion. I definitely see how this is a predicament that needs to be addressed. The only other workaround would be is to make them two separate items and make two categories under Magazine - Print and Digital. Then in the description for the items, link to the alternate version. At this moment there these suggestions will not be implemented, if anything changes we will make sure to update this thread. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post (squ.re/Ideate-Commuity) from one of our Seller Community Moderators.
In the meantime, keep an eye out for any updates in our Seller Community. We appreciate your input! 🙂
Thank you for your response; however, it is still not working. I did what you said - nothing. I have separated my products into "Physical" and "Digital" categories - nothing. My customers are still being charged a shipping fee for their digital purchases. How can I fix this?! I didn't have this problem with Weebly, so I'm curious if you all could consult with them to correct this.

@Bugg Thanks for putting that together.
Does anyone know how the link attribute can be added to its excel entry and imported/exported like all the other items in the site library?
I noticed your post about the challenges you've been facing with selling both print and digital versions of your magazine through Square. It's understandable to want a seamless experience for your customers while still being able to manage the different product formats effectively.
I wanted to let you know about SendOwl's new integration with Square Online that could be a game-changer for your situation. With SendOwl, you can sell digital products right alongside your physical inventory on your Square Online store, without the hassle of manual delivery or refunding shipping fees.
Here's how it works:
The integration supports selling all kinds of digital content, including ebooks, music, courses, and more. Plus, SendOwl provides industry-leading security features to protect your files, like download limits, expiration dates, and PDF stamping.
So instead of dealing with separate physical and digital listings, manual refunds, or delayed customer emails, you can streamline everything through the Square + SendOwl integration. Your customers get instant access to their digital purchases, while you get to manage your sales and inventory seamlessly in one place.
If you're interested in exploring this solution further, I'd recommend checking out SendOwl's Square integration page for more details on getting set up: [insert link]. Their support team is also super helpful if you have any questions along the way.
I hope this helps alleviate some of the digital delivery headaches you've been experiencing! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best regards,
Matt
