Issues with switch to square plus barcoded items

Square Plus:  We recently purchased a convenience store with a short order grill.  It is quick casual, walk-up to order, sit down, come up and get your food.  With the convenience store, there are a lot of barcoded items-snacks, candy, drinks, etc.  I have a square register, and a square handheld.  I used the square handheld to create new items for everything including scanning their barcode, entered inventory, etc.   When I try to ring up an order that has a food item (like a breakfast plate) plus a convenience store item, like a bag of chips or soda, it says the barcode cannot be found.  I have to ring up the breakfast plate, then exit and go to "convenience store mode" and ring up those items separately.

Is there a way to ring up barcoded items with prepared food items in the same mode?

Hi @BLG

You can definitely scan barcoded items while using Square for Restaurants, we just need to ensure you're items are set up correctly in your Item Library.

If you’re seeing a “barcode not found” message, it usually means one of a few things: the barcode wasn’t saved correctly to the item's SKU/GTIN field, or the item isn’t assigned to the correct location.

Here are a few settings I'd recommend checking first:

Go to Dashboard > Items & Services > Items > Item Library and open one of the barcoded convenience items (like chips or soda). Make sure:

  • The barcode is saved in the SKU/GTIN field.
  • The item is assigned to the correct location.
  • The item is not archived.
  • Inventory tracking is enabled (if you’re tracking stock).

If you still have no luck, can you let me know whether you're seeing the error on both devices? Can you also include the name of one of your retail items you're trying to scan?

We can definitely take a closer look to see what we might need to adjust to make sure this is working for you.
