It seems that Square recently enabled the ability to have variation photos within items. While this is exciting, it also seems that because of this add on, some of the variations that had photos within online are now missing.
This happened last year when Square turned on the automatic sync between items and online. If the item had a description online but not in items, it defaulted to the item description and erased hundreds of item descriptions that existed online (from which we are still recovering).
I'm hoping this isn't the case- but have found quite a few online items that had individual variation photos that are now all missing.. the problem is it requires us to look product by product to figure it out- not easy when you have over 1,000 different items!
I really wish when Square did this they understood the full ramifications of their actions.
Something similar is happening to our store, about half of the item images, both variations and main, are not displaying. In fact they are returning a 404 message. I'm chatting with square online support right now, will let you know if they find a fix.

It looks like it was happening to more than just me, and I have a case number to reference while they work on the problem. As of this moment it still appears to be happening, hoping they get it sorted out soon.

I will reach out but know from experience with the item/online description auto sync that implemented last year that there was little that could be done. We lost hundreds of descriptions and we are STILL finding them and fixing them.
