How to add a category based discount on Square Retail?

I'm currently using a Square Register and Retail Plus.

Is it possible to add a category based discount to a customer group?

I know with the POS on the iPad this is possible (create a discount on the dashboard, assign on the ipad POS, under customers open the group and then click manage discounts), on moving to Square Register I can't seem to find a way. Our scenario is a 10% discount on our menu board  (categories icecream and take out drinks) to our loyal members we add to our Group VIP.

Any help and ideas gladly received 🙏 😊

@Breffni @Thank you for looking in to this. It’s a the category discount great feature to have and has recently been added to the IPad POS and works really well. Just a little bit of a shame as when we flipped from the iPad to the register (which by the way is very nice), we though the register would show the same functionality as the IPad POS. 

On a slightly different point with the Square register, in the configuration section we could not find a means of exiting this setup page, the only way we could see was to switch the register completely off and then back on. The was no obvious return to previous page or close page ‘x’ button. Just a little observation the shop Team noted recently.

Hopefully you the team there can flip the switch and get category discounts function working. Thank you 🙂

Any thoughts on this? I'm also going to add to the ideate as a feature request. Register is a step up from the POS, but then there are niggley functions missing on the register retail software that are on the ipad pos. 😭

Hi @doc_choc - apologies for the delayed response. 

I don't have a Square Register with me currently to test this out but I should be able to later in the week. 

However, we should be able to set this up. 

When you create a discount for a Customer Group, the discount will automatically apply to the entire purchase when a buyer from the group is added to a transaction, speeding up the checkout process.

To create a discount for a Customer Group from your Dashboard:

1. Go to your online Square Dashboard and select Items > Discounts.
2. Click Create a Discount, and enter the discount details.
3. Toggle on Discount rules.
4. Click Customer Group from the menu, then select Next.
5. Select a Customer Group from the list, or search for a Customer Group in the search bar you want to apply the discount to.
6. Click Done to save your new discount.

Note: While using Square for Retail, create the discount for a customer group from your Retail Dashboard. Once created in your Dashboard, the discount will apply to your assigned customer group in the Retail app on iOS and Square Register.

Thank you for the information. We tried this but we can not seem to assign a category discount to a group, it will only apply a 10% discount to the whole transaction if the customer is in the group, so any additional items in the basket not included say a box of chocolates will also get a 10% discount.

Currently when using the the iPad POS, via the dashboard we set up a 10% discount to apply to two categories; takeout drinks and ice creams. Then on the iPad we have a VIP/club group of customers, we select the group and then in the little hamburger menu for the selected group there is a little button you press to manage the discounts for this group, where you can select the discounts set up in the dashboard to apply to this group. Outcome , when a customer is added to the transaction who is in the VIP/Club group, they receive an automatic 10% discount on drinks or ice creams category if they add items from these categories to the transaction. 

There isn't a 'manage discounts' button when you select the group, this seems to be the problem. Also when creating the discount it only allows you to a pound amount or % off to a group.

What's nice with this is the team member at the checkout doesn't have do anything to apply the member discount.

Hmm, I get you @doc_choc because when I created my customer group to test this, my discount rule was the customer group itself rather than the item or category which is what we need at the same time and I can't select two. 

I think this is looking to be a feature request but I will reach out internally for confirmation.

@Breffni all figured out and working now, thanks for working on this with me. Just want to share how we achieved for other users.

I downloaded the Square Retail POS on to the iPad. In the Square dashboard I set up the group discount (we offered 10% off two categories, takeout drinks and ice cream), then on the iPad retail POS I added the discount to the group through manage group discounts in the customer directory. Then whoosh, when we looked at the Square Register the discount was on the Register ready to use. It’s a bit convoluted to get there but not that bad and more importantly it works (worth the journey), so we have a very happy team here.😃
