Help! I sell Wagyu beef and am new to Square. I need to create items to sell by the pound but I want to track them by the package. The problem is that the packages are variable weights. Say I have 5 packages of Top Sirloin. One weighs .7 lbs, another might weigh 1.2 lbs and a third might weigh 1.5 lbs. I need Square to show that there are 5 packages and that Top Sirloin goes for $20/lb. I'm not sure Square can do what I need.
I would test this with 2-3 packages before entering the whole freezer. The cleanest Square workaround is usually package-level inventory, not one shared bulk-weight item: create Top Sirloin, then make each physical package its own variation/SKU such as "Top Sirloin - 0.70 lb", "Top Sirloin - 1.20 lb", etc. Set quantity to 1 for each package and price it from the $20/lb math.
That keeps the package count honest because each package can only sell once. The tradeoff is that Square is not really calculating from one live "Top Sirloin pounds on hand" bucket anymore; you are pre-pricing each package by its actual weight.
If you need the POS to calculate price from scale weight and also keep exact package-level inventory, I would be cautious. That may not fit one native Square item cleanly, so I would run a test sale/refund on a few sample packages before loading all cuts.
