Conducting inventory counts with fractional items

I own a wine/beer shop that sells beers and sodas in both six- or four-packs and singles, so my default unit is six-pack or four-pack (however it ships), and then we break some of them up and sell them individually. Tracking the inventory works fine, it will show as .25 of a four-pack if there is a single can left, but if I try to do to cycle count, it shows up as 0. Is there really no way to count fractional objects as such?

If you have Square for Retail you could use the Sell by Units or Stock Conversion.  Here is more about that :

7237-stock-conversion-sell-by

The only difference is that you would have to do the Math when entering or counting inventory.   1-4 pack is actually 4 beers.  1- 6pack is actually 6 when doing inventory.

When selling you scan the barcode of the 4 or 6 pack, enter the number of 4 or 6 packs and Square would adjust your inventory correctly.  But when you enter your Inventory the count is at the minimum selling unit 1 in your case.

I do use the stock conversion when adding the inventory (1 ea = 1/4 fo). I presumed I could work around it if I changed the unit stocked by to 'each' instead of 'four-pack', but that's a little clumsy and counterintuitive (we count by the four-pack, not the each). Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. It would be a lot easier to note a count of 12.25 four-packs instead of seeing 49 individual units listed and doing the math backwards.

@tiptopwineshop ;

You do not have to do the Math backwards.  If you put in 49 as your example states. Square would show inventory as:

  • 49    Singles
  • 12    4 packs
  • 8      6 packs

For what is available for sale.

Its just when you do inventory you need to have the Smallest amount you sell as the lowest amount for your Calculations, and the Count you put into Inventory.

I just received 432 of these 10 hour votives.  I sell them by each, by a pack of 72 or by the case.  So I got 1 case in of 432 votives and Square shows the below image in my Items inventory.   :

10hour.png

So I know I can sell :

  1. 432 singles
  2. 6 Packs of 72
  3. 1 case of 432

When I received the Inventory I only entered I recieved 432, the full case amount.

My point is you can not enter into inventory that you have 15 6-packs and 38 4 packs for example you would need to enter

the total singles you have in stock.

so for this example:

15x6 =   90

38x4 =  152

for a total for inventory of 152+90 = 242 singles in stock.

So instead of having a .25 = a single you should have 1 = a single   4 = a 4 pack etc
