Can't scan barcode to SKU field for new items

For the last 5 years,  to create a new item I scan the barcode on the package and it saves to the SKU field. I just tried to add a new item last week and I can only scan the barcode to the GTIN field. If I try to cut and paste the scanned number from GTIN to SKU, it does not work in Checkout because Square saves spaces between the numbers. All of my other 1,000+ products are saved with the barcode data in the SKU field which is what my online store and my accounting software use to sync inventory. Up until last week I could manually select the SKU field instead of the GTIN field but now that is not working. I called Square support and was not given a clear answer for this change and how to fix it. Has anyone else had this issue and an idea how to fix?

Not sure if this will or will not help out, but did you try scanning the Barcode into a spreadsheet under the SKU field, then upload this back to Square.   I have some of my prepackaged items that the Barcode was scanned into the SKU field before but have not added new items with a barcode to the SKU field as I leave it as a GTIN and the let Square create the SKU field.

We used to create a new item by typing in product name, category, price  etc then scanning the barcode into the SKU field on Square Register.
Now when we attempt to scan the item barcode into the SKU field a random number populates the GTIN field and overwrites the product name with something completely different.
The only way to avoid this is to manually transcribe the barcode into the SKU field - which is  a cause for potential error.
This is a new problem (3 months) and a real nuisance.
