I'm looking for a way to quickly apply a dollar (not a percentage) discount to a single item during the checkout phase, i.e. if I have an item inventoried at $30 and I agree to sell it to the buyer for $20, is there a way to remove that $10? The only way I have found to do it is to manually go in and change the price that I have it inventoried at, but that is counter productive to my record keeping and is way to slow when I'm at an event.
@CyanideandLace you can go to discounts under Items on your dashboard and create a variable amount discount. You can set it up to enter the amount at checkout. When you ring out a customer on your register select discounts, pick manager approved discount (or whatever you named it), and enter the amount you're taking off. I use this method because it's more efficient at checkout for quick adjustments.
Hello @CyanideandLace ,
I see this is your first post — welcome! 😊
To be honest, I think the way you’re currently handling it might be the easiest. At checkout, you can tap on the item, scroll down to the Discounts section, and apply the one you want from there. To clarify, because I see you posted this in the retail thread, are you using the retail app or standard point of sale app? In the standard point of sale app, they do have a button at checkout for your discounts.

I hope that makes sense. I’ll also tag a few experts who may have additional tips to share. @Candlestore @homeprogreen @StevenCheech @Twpchair. Thanks everyone!
I believe there's been a misunderstanding. When you tap that, a blank menu comes up. I'm assuming you need to have pre-established discounts to use in order to add those during checkouts. That isn't what I'm looking for, and is more or less useless, as there is no way for me to anticipate how much of a discount the buyer and I will agree to. I'm asking if there is a way to subtract from the total on the fly. As in, at the checkout stage, can I take $20 off a $75.33 charge or do I have to manually go in and modify the price of the item(s) to reflect the discount? As near as I can tell, there is no way to do that. I have found other threads asking about this kind of utility, but they are from many years ago, so I'm assuming the problem has been fixed, and if it hasn't, that is a baffling oversight.
Yes if you’re trying to use discount then you need to set those up ahead of time in order to populate the discount menu. I set up a 10% as standard and then a few more percentages to cover the spread
If you’re using the Square for Retail then it’s really easy to change the price of an item on the fly. Add the item to the cart then click on it in the cart. That will open up a side window for that item, scroll down and the last box lists, tax, discounts, price adjustment, comp item, item note. Hit price adjustment toggle and it will open a keypad for you to enter the new price. Enter your new one time price and hit save to adjust the item in the cart. It sounds like a lot of steps but it is really fast and easy

I apologize for the delay and want to thank @JUYBoutique20 and @homeprogreen for stepping in to help and walking a fellow seller through how to set this up. You are both so appreciated!
I hope this gave you some clarity @CyanideandLace and helped find a solution. If you need anything else please let me know! 😊
