Adding Subcategories to existing Items

Hi all! We have been trying to figure this out and Square support has been very unhelpful and unavailable. I have been with Square for years and have thousands of items. I want to add multiple options or subcategories per item that can be chosen at our point of sale. I know I can just recreate the item in it's most basic form then add all the options but this will lose our extremely important history, report information, and each variation must have it's own unique SKU. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

welcome to the Square Community forum as I see this is your first post.

Now on to adding Subcategories.  Are ou trying to do this in Square POS or Square Online?

I do not use Square online so my focus will be for Square for Retail.

You will want to go to your Square Dashboard on a Computer > Items > Categories.

Create a New category  ( Cedar Lanterns )

Once this is Created create another Category or two ( this is a SubCategory Halloween and Christmas Lanterns).

While creating the Subcategories you will see a little lower a section called Parent Category.  Choose Cedar Lanterns in this area for Halloween and Christmas Lanterns.  This will then have these two sub categories under the Cedar Lanterns.

When you want to add items to Halloween Lanterns you just choose Category Halloween Lanterns and you do not need to go through the Parent and into the sub category.  The other thing on the Point of Sale you can just Favorite a Sub Category for seasonal things.... ie I switched Halloween and Christmas Lanterns after Holloween on my Favorites Screen on the POS.
