I cannot seem to get the sample email to work so i ordered something to see what the receipt would look like, but i didn't get one until i manually clicked to send receipt to customer. is there a way to get this to go automatically?

In order for receipts to send automatically your customer has to enter their email or phone number just once after they make a purchase with either you or another Square seller. This will opt them in to receiving automatic receipts from there on out.
They can always opt out of them through the receipt link that is sent to them via email or text. When that happens, they'll be asked to enter their info after a sale if they ever want to start getting those automatic receipts again.
It sounds like during your receipt test that maybe you had never opted in to receive automatic receipts? Now, if you make a purchase with another Square seller or try a test transaction again, you would get a receipt right after the sale without having to enter your info.
