Why does Square split refunded items into a separate “order” instead of removing them?

Hey everyone, I’m running into something with Square Online orders that’s been really frustrating and wanted to see if others are dealing with this or if I’m missing something.

When I receive an order and need to refund/cancel just one item, Square ends up splitting the order into two parts:
• The original order (which I can mark as shipped normally)
• A second “order” that contains the refunded item

The issue is:
• The refunded portion just sits in my Orders page
• If I try to mark it as shipped, it asks if I’m sending a separate order
• There doesn’t seem to be a clean way to remove it
• I have to click through multiple steps just to clear it out

My question is:
Why does Square treat a refunded item like a separate order instead of just removing it from the original order?

It makes order management messy, especially when handling multiple orders a day.

Is there a better way to handle partial refunds so they don’t clutter the Orders page?

Would love to hear how others are dealing with this.
