Why do item images disappear from the online listings and the app? Is it from importing new file?

I'm trying to set up online selling and the photos that were with various items have disappeared with no apparent reason.

I thought it was due to importing a new excel file to replace the current catalog, but a few images are still there.

I can add an image to an item or category, but they mostly seem to vanish.
