The usefulness of the Daily Gross Sales has increasingly diminishing returns. The longer you use Square, the less useful and significantly more misleading this report becomes.
Say you do $1000 in sales on a typical day. Now, you get a big order one day on top of your regular sales for $500. You put the invoice in the system and the customer pays, but then realizes they used their personal card instead of their business card. You refund them the amount, duplicate the invoice and they pay again.
Now, in perpetuity, this report will show $2000 sales for the day. There is no way to filter this out and you are showing over 33% more than what should be reported in sales
Another scenario: a CSR is working the till and putting an order in for a customer, and hits "cash" when the customer is paying by card, and they just click through and accidentally complete the transaction. They have to then do a refund to fix the cash drawer, and recreate the transaction, then collect card payment.
This, too, would skew your sales report by 20% over a typical day.
WHAT'S WORSE is that now, forevermore, the Daily Gross, Weekly Gross and Yearly Gross reports will reflect these mistakes as part of gross sales. Every time a comparison opportunity arises (the next day, the next week, all of next year) this misleading information will be reported in the mix.
While this may be the correct definition of a "gross sales report", in accounting practices you should NEVER report gross sales apart from an income statement that shows discounts and returns/refunds because of how it lacks business intelligence.
We just went through a troubleshooting process with Square support where we were instructed to refund/recreate invoices that amounted to 4x our typical sales. It has skewed that day, breaks our weekly reporting, and will forever skew the annual sales on the gross reporting.
The Gross Sales reports are now useless to us for trying to monitor growth, changes to patterns and basic comparison reporting.
Please, either create a Daily Net Sales reporting option for the Sales Trends or MINIMALLY add a filtering feature so that we can get at the data that actually gives us some intelligence.
