I've been reading some previous threads asking about tagging items so customers can easily search for particular product attributes. It appears the only way to do this is to create a category for each attribute that you want to make searchable? This seems pretty cumbersome.
I have a site where I sell native wildflower seeds and I'd like customers to be able to filter my products down by bloom time, germination code, states where the plant is native, flower color, etc. So I would have to create a category for each month of the year and add each plant to each month-category that it blooms (note plants oftern bloom for several months); create a category for each germination method and add each plant to the particular germination method; create a category for each state and add each plant that is native in each state-category (note that some plants are native to all 50 states...); create a category for each color and add each plant to a color category. I'll be doing this full time for MONTHS! Surely there's a better way!
I see that Square lets you create custom attributes, but as far as I can tell, you can't access these custom attributes via your website or actually do anything useful with them. They're just kind of there. What's the deal?
Seems as though the ability to add tags would be very useful. Oh look! Square community threads use tags (labels)! How useful!
Hi there, @mysticcoffee,
I completely understand your frustration, for a catalog like native wildflower seeds, creating separate categories for every bloom month, state, germination code, and color would definitely become overwhelming. You’re correct that categories are currently the primary way to organize items for browsing, and while custom attributes allow you to store additional item details, they aren’t exposed as customer-facing filters on Square Online at this time. Advanced multi-attribute filtering (like tagging or faceted search) isn’t currently built in, though I agree it would be incredibly useful for your type of catalog. In the meantime, using broader categories and adding consistent attribute details in item descriptions can help customers search more effectively. I’ll be sure to share your feedback with our product team, as this is a great example of where enhanced filtering would make a big difference!
We have a pretty gigantic online catalog. Structuring the categories in a way that made sense from a user interface standpoint was something we agonized over. IMO too many categories is overwhelming. I've found the item descriptions are searchable and will return a result- so if you detail, for example, germination times in your customer facing descriptions- in theory that will come up.
I would suggest you create a description template that is the same for every seed pack that details that information specifically.
