Sale items vs regular items and inventory

It's easier for me to describe what it is I want to do. We own a lip gloss business. We have older inventory that we want to sell for half off. How can we do that along with the newer inventory? Also, we have a limited number of sale items, how do we manage that so that when they are gone, it's marked to be out of stock?

Is it correct that you are referring to products that have same sku, and some of the same sku are older and you want to provide them at half off while still selling the newer inventory of the same SKU at regular price?

One way you can do it is perhaps put a sticker on the older inventory that indicates 50% off clearance and then during checkout apply a 50% discount to those specific items. 

Another way you can do it is to duplicate the product and modify the sku slightly perhaps to add an S at the end of the SKU to indicate sale, And then set that price of that item and the quantity that you have in stock.
