I've seen past posts from folx saying they got a voicemail from their "Account Manager", called back & then got ghosted.
Pretty sure this was phishing. I am nowhere near a "million dollar merchant", I don't need (or want) an Acct. Manager. I didn't ask for one and I'm pretty sure if Square decided I rated one they would've at least dropped some sort of message into my dashboard.
The person who left the VM said I was welcome to email them for more info but didn't give their email address? I did call back just to test it, and left one message but of course no call back I tried the number again & it said they were "out of office"
Contacted the Square "help chat" who confirmed it was most likely fraud. They wouldn't say whether they'll release an alert to merchants about it so here's mine.
If you get such a call (and actually talk to someone), tell them they can send you a message with all the info through your Square account's message system. DO NOT GIVE THEM THE EMAIL ADDRESS (or any other personal info) ASSOCIATED WITH IT. If they ask for it, tell them to just use the one Square already has on file.
If you don't talk to them and they leave VM, I'd just block the number & let it go.
Be careful out there!!
I have had a Square account Manager for over 2 years now. When I first was contacted he said he was with Square and said he had my email as [email protected] and wanted to know if that was correct, and other information available through Square. He did send an email to me to give me his contact information. Now that being said, I do agree that everyone needs to be careful since these scammers are pretending to be anyone and everyone to get $, including Law enforcement.
So yes do not give out personal information and wait for them to contact you through verifiable means.
My account manager gave me their number if I ever have any issues with Square and said I could contact them. In 2 years he contacts me once or twice a year to see how everything is and I only had to contact him once when I was having problems with my Scanner and Square reader disconnecting.
OK. Question: how did you get your account manager? did you request one? did they just assign you one, and if so what was the process or trigger (eg sales amount) for it happening?
If I'd had one (ever) before it might not have seemed so odd but it was out of nowhere with no additional follow up. I did have a few other messages from Square in my official, signed in dashboard but nothing about (or from) an account manager.
Obviously YMMV but I'm on the "better safe than sorry" team.
Got a phone call, then a few more over the weeks from the same number. I have no idea why I got the account manager or Squares algorithm for getting one. Googled the number came up to a Square number and as I said I got an email after our phone conversation that was from a Square email address. So for me it was not a scam and I agree it is better off playing it safe.
PS I will absolutely report back if it turns out to be legit but I wouldn't hold your breath.
Hi there, @photodei77,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Can you please send me a private message with information about the call you received such as the phone number and name of the person?
I feel like this is best kept public b/c it does seem sketchy. The # was 314-325-7785 and they said their name was "Asia" (spelled based on pronunciation). Didn't leave a last name or email.
If it was for real, and someone needs to reach me, Square does have my correct email address on file & they're welcome to contact me that way. As I said though, I don't really need an "account manager". I'd rather Square put their money into making the sites easier to use but that's me.
Thanks for the reply tho, Ellie!
oy sorry for double reply. it signed me out in the middle of typing the first one so I just figured I'd be starting over.
Happy to put it out in public b/c I do believe it's sketchy. They (she?) said the name was "Asia" (or maybe Aja?) and the number was 314-325-7785. If they really are an Acct Manager they're welcome to contact me via email. Square has my correct info on file. Thanks.
Hello @photodei77 I was able to confirm your account IN FACT got assigned an account manager. Her name is Aysia. I apologize for all the confusion.
I am a Community Moderator and a reliable source for this information.
P.S. Welcome to the Seller Community
Oh that's interesting, thank you, JJ (and Ellie)
I guess I'll wait to see if I ever hear back from her. I'll have to ask how/why she was assigned, I definitely didn't request such a thing and I can't imagine what her role is.
Might be worth letting "them" know the way that went down seemed sketchy & might discourage folx who actually want an acct manager from using the one assigned. At the very least I'd hope the person would've sent an email to the address attached to my account, that would've made me feel more confident in its reality. And maybe let your chat folx know that if a customer asks them to report potential fraud, the answer shouldn't be "YOU can report fraud yourself <by calling our generic toll-free line where the wait was listed as 30 min>"
In any case, thank you.
This is great feedback @photodei77 I will make sure to pass it over.
