Just today, I had a customer say when they tried to check out for an event registration (ie: a non-physical item) it asked for their shipping address, even though we don't ship anything and the item is set as an Event, so a non-physical item.
I assumed it was a one time glitch, however when I went to test it, lo and behold:
Then a colleague from another state in the same industry posted that she was having the same issue showing on her site. So there must be something. 10 or so other groups checked out with the same item in the past week without issue (including yesterday), so it seems new.
Check out settings were originally set to never ask for the buyer's shipping address. I just went to check those settings to confirm went ahead and toggled to only ask buyer's shipping address if it's local delivery or shipping (I don't offer shipping on any items however), but that did not affect anything.
Thoughts @kellyj @DannyH or any Square friends?
@Maegan thanks for this. @Barbara_B would you mind taking a look at this. This may be related to something that needs to go through CS Or one of our tests. We’ll take a look.
Great-- keep me updated. Still doing the same thing today/this morning.
@Sam_400º Thanks-- as mentioned in the post, checkout settings to collect addresses are indeed off for both recipient and buyer addresses for non-physical items.
@Maegan Because your event items are taxable, "the system" has to ask for buyer address in order to determine the sales tax. So even though you have the "always collect..." option turned off, in this case, the address is required to determine taxability.
That theoretically makes sense, but is there a way to just ask for zip code to determine taxability when it is a non-physical item? It seems like this issue has just popped up. I don't recall it with other non-physical items I've offered in the past.
Just asking for zip code makes sense and I know that's something that has been discussed. I will pass on this feedback and see what we can do. For now, though, it's not an option.
@Maegan Just while this is being looked into it might be worth checking your settings under the checkout. There is an option there to collect delivery addresses on items on non-physical items too.
