Online Inventory versus actual Inventory - Not wanting to create duplicates items

Seems like an enormous waste of time to create a duplicate item for every item we carry and offer online.  Why has there not been a feature to create an online inventory that is linked to the actual, similar to an online price?  
We keep running into issues with online orders when customers are able to purchase items we do not have. 

We would like to make our online inventory 5-10 less than actual inventory, so we do not run out in store before we can pull those items.

Just to make sure we understand you correctly, you are looking for a way to have two inventories on the same item, but one is specific to online orders? We just want to make sure we can point you in the right direction!
