Disabling Low Stock Alerts in Square Dashboard

I am going to throw this out to the community because I wasted a whole lot of time trying to disable the low stock alert on my online shop. I found many posts in the community and many support articles, but everything I found described solutions that did not exist. I can only assume that what may have worked in the past no longer does due to changes in the site organization.

Anyway, what worked for me was from the dashboard go to online > online store > shared settings > item preferences (found way down the screen). That opens a page:

Clicking the Edit button allows one to disable the low inventory indicator, or adjust the number as desired.

This probably will not work after the next site update, but for the moment it works for me and I hope it may help the next person confounded by unwanted alerts.

Solution

I just wanted to close the loop here, @Makai, and for anyone else following along!

To clarify, there are actually two different low-stock/low-inventory alert features in your Square account, and there’s a small but important difference in the language used to distinguish them. I wanted to clarify this after my initial reply.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how each option works and where you can update their respective settings:

1. Square Online Low Inventory Alerts

These alerts are specifically tied to Square Online items and control the low-stock banner that appears on your website. This setting can be enabled or disabled for your online listings (Online > Online Store > Items (if your have multiple Square websites, select Shared Settings) > Item Preferences > Low Inventory Indicator).

2. Item Library Low Stock Alerts (Dashboard & App)

This setting lives in your standard Dashboard Item Library and triggers an alert when an item’s stock reaches the threshold you set. This helps you track available units when ringing up sales. You can find the settings for this here

Important note for anyone reading:

If you want to disable only the Square Online low inventory banner, make sure you update the setting in Item Preferences within your Online Dashboard.

For low-stock alerts, you’ll need to update the settings directly in your Item Library.

Hi @Makai, welcome to the Community! 👋

Thanks so much for dropping by with this advice! It sounds like you’re noticing that some steps in our online guides might be a bit out of date following a recent update, which can definitely happen. I really appreciate you flagging this, and I’ll be passing your feedback along to our team so we can make sure those resources stay accurate and up to date.

Just to confirm I’ve understood correctly: most item settings are now managed directly from the Item Library page. However, it sounds like even after following those steps to disable low stock alerts, you’re still needing to go into your Online Store > Item Preferences to turn them off there as well, is that right?

If so, that’s great insight! I’ll share this with our product and content teams so we can look into aligning those two settings, or at least clarifying in our guides that both may need to be updated for the change to take effect.

I'll keep a lookout for your response!

Correct, the steps described in the linked article do not match what appears on my screen.
