Custom domain issues

Hello

I have a domain purchased elsewhere that I want to associate with my Square website. I connected the domain and entered the nameserver details and the DNS entries at the host 2 days ago. The Square Online domains area said that I have connected successfully and that it may take up to 24 hours to appear. The Status below this message, however, says "Not Connected".

Historically, changes to nameservers have taken up to 4 hours to propagate (I am a web developer) but this clearly isn't the case here.

I have followed the "Connect Your Domain" instructions but it's been over 48 hours and I'm still not connected.

Am I missing something really obvious?

Cheers

Hi Sas ( @bakerlou ),

Was it the manual steps that you followed? It really looks as simple as completing a couple of A records. I don't know what your domain is so couldn't check..

Use something like googles online dig too:

https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/dig/

If you type in your domain there, and choose 'A' record type it should resolve to the correct address (199.34.228.168). If it does then you're domain config is correct.

If you post your domain name, I'm happy to check it for you.

Regards,

Bruce

Hi Bruce

Thanks for replying. I followed the manual steps.

The domain is www.just-gf.com.au with Crazy Domains. I added the nameservers and DNS entries to redelegate the web site.

I have entered

@ 199.34.228.164

www 199.34.228.164

as shown in my manual steps at Square. These are still showing in Crazy Domains.

I had to hunt around for the nameservers and found this article

https://squareup.com/help/au/en/article/6962-manage-dns-records

where the nameservers were

dns1.register.com

dns2.register.com

They point to

162.159.27.248 and
162.159.26.197

once resolved by Crazy Domains.

However, Google admin toolbox shows an IP address of 209.99.64.70 so something has gone wrong.

I have redelegated domains many times for myself and my customers when I was a developer and it's not usually this hard!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Sas

PS. I'd share a screenshot but that doesn't seem to be possible in this web editor.

Hi Sas,

Yep, definitely an issue at crazy domains end - which isn't surprising, The interface is a bit rubbish, and Ive had issues updating records for others before.

Did you by any chance have a domain and hosting package with them before? I've seen issues before where the DNS is actually controlled by the zone editor in a hosting account, but it's not obvious from the DNS editor in the account admin as you can still edit/update records (but it has no effect).

I just noticed you seem to have the www one sorted out now (i just got it to resolve to the right address). Not sure if you've changed anything.. If not, you may just need to wait a while.

Happy to take a quick look with you over something like zoom/teamviewer if you get really stuck..

Hi Bruce

Thanks again for your reply. Just realised you're down the road from me! I'm on the edge of the Swan Valley.

Just after my reply, I contacted Crazy Domains and they noticed the @ in the DNS record and advised me to remove it. I can see through DNS checker that it is mostly resolved to the correct IP address and the web site is finally visible!

I'm guessing I'll also need to add some MX records as well at Crazy Domains. I can't seem to find an answer on the help pages. Do you know if I need to do this?

Cheers

Haha,

Small world..

Yes, quite often '@' is used to represent the root domain, but it doesn't work in lots of the control panels. I guess crazy domains is one of them!

The MX record is for email. what are you planning to do for email ? If you want to have [email protected]   then you'll need to associate this with some sort of email provider - zoho offer a small 'forever free' plan that would work, but it only works with webmail or there apps, other option would be something like office 365 (which i think crazy domains sell).

You could just not bother with email, and send correspondence from a person email address, but it looks a lot nicer coming from your custom domain...

Hi Bruce

Very small world indeed!

I guess we now know that Crazy Domains doesn't like the @ symbol!

I do want a branded email and didn't realise that wouldn't be covered in the Square subscription. I have a couple of other hosts so will talk to them about email only hosting.

Thanks again for all your help. I have found Square to be confusing to setup and integrate with other apps which is kind of ironic given that I'm a .NET software developer and have previously just set up my own online ordering sites!

Cheers
