Really sorry to hear that the compatibility of the Square Reader wasn't made clearer to you before buying it. The Square Reader wasn't built to be connected to a laptop as it is usually connected to a smartphone device via Bluetooth to take payments. You can check out the compatibility of the Square Reader on the compatibility page on our website.
We understand that it's up to you to make the best decisions for your business, but we're sorry to hear you're thinking of leaving us nonetheless. However, since you already have a Square account and if you end up changing your mind about staying with us, I would recommend returning the Square reader and getting the Square Terminal instead.
If you're planning on using a laptop to take in-person payments, you can connect your Square Terminal to your Virtual Terminal (located on your Square Dashboard) to allow your customers to tap their cards instead of having to input their card details into the device. Check out this article which gives instructions on how to connect your Square Terminal to your Virtual Terminal.
If you decide to proceed with this, you can return your Reader as long as it's within the 30-days since the date of purchase.
