Wanted to know what gift card are axcept thru square. I tried to a onevanilla gift and didnt process
Hey @Dannyboi-
You can accept gift cards with a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover logo as long as the transaction price does not exceed the balance of the gift card. Process these cards the same way you would a regular credit or debit card, by swiping the card through the Square Reader, or manually entering the card information.
If you'd like to sell gift cards for your business, to be redeemed by customers, you would have to order our physical gift cards or use our egift cards. If you have any questions about this, please take a look at our FAQ page for gift cards.
Let me know if you have any questions about this! 💳
What zip code would be entered in this situation?
Hi @dreafatone - Welcome to The Seller Community, it's always nice to see a new face 😊
Great Question.
The customer should be able to complete the transaction but putting their own zip code in, in this situation.
I hope this helps.

Olive, what do you do when there's no expiration date etc. on an American Express Gift Card so the fields can't be filled out completely?
I am having hard time getting my customer's American Express gift cards to go through. This is my third one with issues. The expiration date say 11/2029. Is there something I am doing wrong. Customers are getting frustrated b/c our system will not work with their gift cards. Is there a trick to taking other gift cards in the systme?
Did you ever solve this problem? We're having the same one.
I have never been able to process a visa, MC or amx gift card...frustrating and I've lost sales.
Adding to what Isabelle said, if the amount is more than what the gift card is valued. What we do is a split payment. for instance if the amount is 50.00 and a customer has a gift card for 25.00, you can do a split payment and run the gift card for 25.00.
We recently encountered this issue with a Mastercard Gift Card. We called Square and they said it was due to insufficient funds (we were charging $50 and the MasterCard Gift Card balance was $50 so we were confused). We then called MasterCard and they said the decline was attributed to a $10 hold on MasterCard gift cards on Square's end. So, the total value on the gift card was $50, but we could only charge $40 to it. Has anyone else experienced this issue (with the hold)? Is there a way to remove this hold for external gift cards? Led to a bad customer experience...they came back 3 different days to try to work this out with us.
Unfortunately, mastercard gift cards and visa giftcards can be difficult just about anywhere. I remember when I had my last baby, someone gave us a $50 Visa Giftcard and SO many places wouldn't accept it. I couldn't even get DoorDash to process the payment. I was so frustrated, so I can see the customer's frustration here. However, this isn't your fault either.
I think it has to do with so much fraud surrounding these gift cards.
