How to accept payments on my iPhone ?

Hi, a complete Day 1 newbie here! 🙂 I have set up the app on my iPhone, but when I try to get paid directly on my phone, (by tapping a card) it says 'Connect a hardware device'. I thought I was able to accept payments through my iPhone only, without having to purchase a device. Thank you for your help!

Welcome to the community, and sorry to hear you’re having trouble with Tap to Pay.


To use Tap to Pay, you will need an iPhone XS or newer, which is running iOS 16.4 or later. Once you’ve confirmed that your device is compatible, you’ll need to set a passcode for your iPhone (if you haven’t already), by going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. 


Then from your Square POS app, follow these steps:

 

  1. From the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen, tap ≡ More.

  2. Tap Settings > Account.

  3. Select Tap to Pay on iPhone > toggle Tap to Pay on iPhone on.

  4. Verify the correct Apple ID is shown. If not, choose Use a Different Apple ID.

  5. Select Agree & Continue to toggle Tap to Pay on iPhone on.

 

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to use Tap to Pay on iPhone if you log in to your Square Point of Sale, or Square Appointments app using a Device Code. You can find more on this as well as guidance on processing Tap to Pay transactions, here
