"Invalid payment request" on Register

This is the second day now where we are regularly, but not always - maybe 1 in 3 transactions? - getting a red "invalid payment request" window pop up when trying to complete a sale. This is on a maybe 2 year old 1st gen but V2 Register. 
- it doesn't matter the payment type; cash and credit are all affected

- it doesn't matter if it is a new transaction or a saved ticket

 

Tried a full factory reinstall and update, this did not solve the issue. 
I was able to open a failed ticket on my iPhone, and process payment there, and the payment went through, so it doesn't seem to be a global issue with our account

Edit: had a chat with Square support. They had me initiate a warranty replacement, deeming it a hardware issue.

Thanks for updating the thread @milkdemcows .  I was going to recommend swapping out the customer facing display with another one (assuming you had one), as it also sounds like some strange hardware issue to me too.
