Why does a transaction discount apply to sale of gift cards now?

Yesterday I had someone in who bought a gift card and other items, I applied a transaction discount, as I have many times before, and the total, including the gift card, was discounted. This never used to be the case.

Is there a remedy for this in the settings that I don't know about?

Hey there @Hollygwynn.  I can tell you for certain that transaction discounts have ALWAYS been applied to give cards.  I’ve issued “complimentary” no charge gift cards to many people over my 10+ year history with Square and I have a 100% discount code that I’ve always used for that.  If it was not doing that for you in the past, that was just a bug in your account that must have been corrected.

If you have a transaction that has both e-gift cards and other items/services, the discount will have to be removed manually from the gift card item.
