Square for Retail BUG - Charge button freezes and does not recalculate when adding to cart

Starting some time last week, our staff started to notice that occasionally the Cart total showing on the Charge button would be different from the total shown on the Customer-Facing Display.
After pressing Charge, if a payment method is not chosen and instead the customer wishes to add more items to the Cart, our staff will X out of the Payment Method selection screen allowing them to add more items to the Cart. However, adding these items does not refresh the calculation on the Charge button, which means that in order to see the new total, staff must press the Charge button with the frozen calculation to see the Payment Method selection screen before they can know how much the Cart total is. This is only one of the cases that I have been able to deduce the cause, but anecdotally I have had some other staff mention that they have encountered the Charge button total freezing without having pressed it.

 

Please look into it and advise.

Questions to Help Diagnose:
  1. Is this happening on all POS devices or specific ones?
  2. Have you noticed any patterns in terms of:
    • Specific items in cart?
    • Time of day?
    • Transaction size?
    • Specific staff members?
  3. Has there been any recent:
    • Square POS app updates?
    • Hardware changes?
    • Network changes?
Prevention Measures

Until resolved, consider implementing these procedures:

  1. Have staff verify totals on Customer-Facing Display before processing
  2. Consider completing one transaction before adding additional items
  3. Document any discrepancies for accounting purposes
