Hi everyone, just starting out on my Square adventure and I'm already confused! I want to buy the register pack as above with the receipt printer, but I'd like to get the Square terminal, rather than the Square Handheld for customers to pay with alongside the POS, as it looks more substantial than the Handheld. My question is then - can I 'slave' the Terminal from the Stand kit and have it use the receipt printer on the cash till?
I don't want to use the Square Reader for this as it doesn't show the price to the customer...
Does anyone else have it set up in this way, or is the Handheld robust enough to sit on the counter?
thanks
Hi @Mandy8! 👋
Welcome to the Square Community and congratulations on starting your Square journey! Great question about hardware setup.
At this time, the Square Handheld offered in the kit is suggested for Tableside ordering, and it doesn't connect to the printer, as the main checkout point of the kit is the Square Stand. You can absolutely use a Square Terminal instead of adding the Square Handheld, and it would work just the same, and also include a printer.
How it works:
Regarding the Reader vs Terminal: You're spot on about the customer display advantage! The Terminal's built-in screen provides a more professional checkout experience compared to just a Square Reader.
Setup tip: Make sure both devices are connected to the same Square location in your account settings for proper integration.
The Terminal is quite popular for countertop use - it's sturdy and gives customers confidence during checkout.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks JJ this is just what I needed! one final question then - if i get the Terminal and the Mpop cash drawer, can I set the system to print from the cash drawer rather than the Terminal?
Yes, you can use the Square Terminal with the mPOP Cash Drawer. However, you will need a Hub for the Square Terminal to have the necessary USB port to connect to it (the same applies to the Square Handheld). For clarity at this time
Here is the mPOP receipt printer and Cash Drawer compatibility list:
Let me know if you have any additional questions, @Mandy8.
Thanks, @Sam_400º for the insightful advice and for jumping in to shine a light.
@JJ_ - you don't mention network connections there at all?
Yup! At this time, our team has only confirmed those options as compatible with the mPOP Receipt Printer and Cash Drawer with Square Hardware. You can find these details on the mPOP's Hardware page in our store.
P.S. Sorry for the delay in my response. It seems like your reply notification got shuffled, and I missed it.
Hey @Mandy8 Can you share what you sell or what your store is like?
I don't see the kits you're referring too so just gonna comment as if individual items.
First up - go for the handheld any day of the week over the terminal unless you're directly printing receipts all day without having another printer. (better hardware, much newer internals built to last years where as the terminal can be a little slow at times).
If you're using the stand just swing it round to pay - don't bother adding a terminal into the mix. Moreover just go for the Register with its detachable customer display. It's on offer right now anyway and cost wise a good purchase.
The mPop is a good little unit that combines cash draw and printer well and can be hidden under the counter if you want too. Ideally use this by adding it to your network then any device can print to it for receipts (terminal/handheld/phones etc) rather than it being tied to one device.
In all I think unless you need a big screen then the handheld is rocking it at the moment - durable (add a case if you're worried) and has built in scanner for retail too.
Pair that with a printer and even if it's always on a counter you're laughing!
