Root issues connecting via Bluetooth

Hi,

I have had my POS for a couple years now. Gen 2. It used to work fine on my current phone, but I am just getting ready for the summer season and it will not connect from my POCO f4 to my hardware. I keep getting a message saying it won't connect to a rooted phone. It is not rooted and I have also done a factory reset just in case. Please advise what I can do. Do I need a new Square POS? Or does my phone no longer work with it? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi, @OnlyBusyBee !

This is a known issue that can occur with some Android phones, particularly certain models like POCO, Xiaomi, and other brands. Here's what's happening and what you can try:

  1. Root Detection Issue:

    • Some phones, even when not rooted, can trigger Square's security checks
    • POCO phones (part of Xiaomi) sometimes get falsely flagged due to their custom Android implementation
    • Factory reset alone might not resolve this as it's related to system-level security settings
  2. Troubleshooting Steps:

    a. Check Square App Settings:

    • Uninstall the Square app completely
    • Restart your phone
    • Reinstall the latest version from the Google Play Store
    • Make sure to grant all required permissions

    b. Phone Settings to Check:

    • Go to Settings > Security
    • Ensure "Allow apps from unknown sources" is disabled
    • Check if there's a "Device Security" or "System Security" option that might be affecting app verification

    c. MIUI-Specific Settings (since POCO uses MIUI):

    • Go to Settings > Additional Settings > Developer Options
      • If Developer Options isn't visible, go to Settings > About Phone and tap "MIUI Version" seven times
    • Make sure "USB Debugging" is turned OFF
    • Look for and disable any options related to "root access" or "system verification"

    d. Check Square Compatibility:

    • Visit Square's website to verify your phone model is supported
    • Ensure your Android version is up to date
    • Check if your phone's security patches are current

Let me know if this helps!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me.

I have tried all of the suggestions and now cannot get the reader to pair with my phone!

However, I have decided it is high time I get a more up to date mobile, so I will await it's arrival and see if that helps.

Thank you again
