Is there a compatibility issue with Pixel 9 phone?

I had to upgrade my smart phone and now I have issues with using my new card swipe reader. The phone keeps shutting down the ringer sound and when it get fixed the card reader fails to work. When I fix that, the ringer shuts down for no real reason. Verizon is reluctant to let me return the phone but can't seem to fix it.

Sounds like your phone has gone bonkers!

I have a Pixel 8a, its not the same phone and probably is totally pointless to mention, but it works fine with the Square Reader, however the phone itself has been in general a little problematic.

I almost upgraded to the Pixel 10, but my 8 and 6 pro are still working just fine and the specs for the 10 just didn't seem enough for me to need to make the jump.

I have the Pixel 8 Pro (Pixel fan boy? here). I've never had any issues with as far as pairing, but I have had other goofy issues with them.  Is your P9 a Verizon branded one or pure Google?  Have you tried to clear cache/storage from the Square app, and also Hard Resetting the Square reader?

It sounds like you are talking about a plug-in swiper, not a Bluetooth-connected chip reader.  If that is correct, are you using the USB-C swipe reader or an older one with the USB-C to headphone adapter?

I just bought a new card swipe with the same connection as the charger cord. It works fine until I try to get the phone to stop turning the ringer volume down on its own. My choice seems to be missed calls or running a manual card entry. This appears to be a compatibility issue or total incompetence by software developers.

Have you tried the steps I mentioned earlier, and also making sure the device and your phone are all up to date?   Does this happen when connecting other devices to Bluetooth or just the Square reader?

The way it works, at least with the headphone jack, and I believe the USB-C also is just mimicking the headphone jack style, is to pretend it is a device plugged into a headphone jack and communicate the same way as headphones would, so the "phone" portion is controlled by the device.

I would only plug it in when you are going to actively swipe a card.  The better solution for your own protection in chargebacks is also to use the Bluetooth reader that has chip reader and tap functions.  Then your phone won't "think" a headphone with a microphone is plugged in.

Yes I had to upgrade the old reader with the usb-c reader. It was working until I updated the phone. Apparently Google does not know how to make the two devices work together either.
