How to split payment type of paper gift certificate and debit/credit

I have tried this over and over again. I enter the first amount and the second amount but it will not relay to charge to the terminal for the customer to pay the outstanding amount.
How do you enter other payment (ie paper gift certificate or store credit and then charge the rest to allow the customer to pay on debit or credit card?) Each time it just shows complete when no payment has actually been made. PLEASE HELP

We created a Discount called "Convert Gift Certificate" and kept it as a variable (this allows you to enter any amount of gift certificate even if it's a manually tracked balance). When you click on the discount, you then can manually enter the amount of the gift certificate and then it subtracts the amount form the total sale, now allowing you to send to the terminal to allow your customer to pay the remaining balance with debit or credit. This also shows as a discount instead of a positive sale so you're not paying tax on that amount again. With the discount being named "Convert Gift Certificate" (or whatever you choose), you can track that discount in reports. Hope this helps!
