My samsung phone won't accept most credit cards or debit cards using the tap function. I can manually enter CC and that works. Also it did accept my American Express but not my mastercard or visa. I have NFC turned on and I have downloaded the latest version. This is also a brand new phone with the latest updates. Last thing is that I am in Canada.

Square works with any Canadian-issued and most non-Canadian issued credit cards with a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover or UnionPay International logo, as well as Interac Debit cards. To process Interac Debit cards, you will need to use the contactless and chip reader or Square Terminal as these cards can only be processed by tap or insert. You will not be able to swipe or manually key in Interac Debit cards.

I also have this issue, Samsung Galaxy s23 Ultra (in Canada), everything up to date and I have never been able to receive a single payment this way.
Galaxy S23 Ultra, all OS and apps up to date, unable to stay connected to Square reader. It flashes 'reader issue' across the top band before going back to 'connecting'. Have to forget reader and reconnect before the peripheral will work. Sometimes it tells me to reset the reader before reconnecting. Bought a second reader from the store, have the same issue.

I double-checked Square’s Device Compatibility page to ensure that your device is compatible with the Contactless + Chip reader.
I suggest running through the troubleshooting steps for the Contactless + Chip reader listed here to ensure that all bases are covered. Since you have encountered this issue on two separate readers, I'm wondering if there could possibly be an issue with your phone or maybe the app 🤔
