How do I discount an individual item for a customer belonging to a category?
We only want to discount some items for members, not all, and the discount is a dollar amount which varies depending on the item.
How can this be achieved?
So, what we really need is, the ability to create a discount for a 'Category' AND an 'Item' not a Category OR an item. Dear Square Team, why is this not possible, am I missing something?

When you say category, do you mean a customer group ? It's currently not possible to create a discount that would automatically apply to a customer group on certain items only. This would be a feature request, which you can file on our Ideate page. I've seen a couple of other sellers requesting it, so hopefully it'll become available in the near future.
In the meantime, the workaround would be to create a variable amount discount on selected items, and manually apply the discount during checkout. You will have to tick off Square Point of Sale when creating the discount, so it doesn't apply automatically.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately we sell too many items that have different amounts for the bar staff to remember each one, and it simply would take too long at the point of sale, but thanks for mentioning it anyway. I also looked at configuring a non-automatic discount for each item, but again once you select the item, and then you add the discount, you have to scroll through a large menu of discounts to find the right one. This is also painful at the point of sale.
We've had to go live with with every item duplicated (we made a members category, and a non-members category) which have different prices for each item and they are separated into two separate 'favourites' menus on the register.
It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing. We still scan the members card so we can attribute the sale to a member, but beyond that it's not really adding the value we're looking for.
At least we were able to use a combination of discounts, and then using an automatic discount schedule to make 'happy hour' work automatically (since Happy Hour pricing is available to members and non-members). Although, it did mean having to create a separate discount entry for each and every item we sell behind the bar, which is a bit of effort, but once setup it works well and automatically applies the correct discount during Happy Hour automatically.
In the meantime we will sit here and hope for automatic discounts on Item AND category support in the near future. This really make Square PERFECT for our use case and I hope the Square Dev team is reading this!!
