I tried to talk to support and was ghosted by two agents so I think they had no idea. I purchased the Zebra Symbol LS2208 from Square to use with Square for Restaurants as it is supposed to work. We have a small store that sells items off a menu but also items off a retail shelf (ice cream candy shop). It's crucial to be able to use the barcode scanner in Restaurant mode. However, the barcode scanner doesn't work in Restaurant mode: when it scans it displays 'Code Not Valid' error. It DOES work if you switch to Retail mode - thus the scanner works and the GTINs are valid.
I have reset the POS to factory and reinstalled the scanner, and I have double checked our GTINs. Support says it should work in Restaurant mode but couldn't offer any other assistance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I REALLY don't want to have to add retail products to our menu, nor do I want staff to have to key in hundreds of products.
I believe I solved my own problem BUT I'm not happy with Square's lack of understanding of their own service. Barcode scanner DOES work in Square for Restaurants but only for SKUs. I purchased the Zebra label barcode printer from Square as well and printed SKU stickers for every product in the store and I am now able to scan products. The workaround before this was an incredibly tedious problem for staff as every item had to be added to the Menu for the POS. Now the staff have to print and add SKU labels to everything but at least they scan.
DEAR SQUARE: Should the barcode scanner be able to scan GTINs in Restaurant Mode or was it intended for SKUs only? And if so, you need to communicate that to people ASAP.
