Owner name change

My last name changed in 2015, but why can I not change it in my account?

Re: Owner name change - Status changed to: Not currently planned

Hi @hairbydani - Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community👋

I went ahead and merged your post to an existing thread where other Square Sellers have discussed this topic as well. We merge duplicate conversations together to keep like comments in one place, and to make it easier for others to find the thread in the future.

At this time, the ability to edit the Owner's name listed on a Square account is a feature request. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post from one of our Seller Community Moderators.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for any updates in our Seller Community.

How is changing the owner name a feature request? That's ridiculous and should be a basic feature. It's not complicated to verify new ownership. In my case, the email address associated with the account was used as the first and last name, so the email gets printed all over order slips, causing the order slip to be unnecessarily long. There is no way I can edit the owner name on my end, even after calling into Square and submitting multiple support requests. Too many friction points for your customers, Square.

Hello @thuyvischi I appreciate you reaching out and completely understand your concern here. I agree there does need to be a way to change the owner name. At this time it is still request and something our team is monitoring. If anything changes we will make sure to let you know. I know this isn't easy and appreciate your patience while we evaluate this.

So, y’all are thinking about this the wrong way! I finally figured out how to do this, after months of not realizing this action — It’s called transfer! You just transfer the business to the new owner name, including if it’s a changed name. It’s super easy.

No, it isn't actually that easy. Transfers are not available for anyone who has ever had a Square loan. Or anyone who did a PPP loan through Square. And the transfer process can be messy and not transfer over inventories and store details neatly.

Square needed to fix this issue with their database over a decade ago. The longer the issue persists, the more obnoxious it is that they have not addressed it.

This option id needed by me as well.

So it's 2024 now, and Square still can't offer a workable solution to a common issue.  And it clearly is not a priority for them.  Since I've used Square for payroll and loans in the past, I can't use the Transfer Ownership option.  The only path forward is to create a new account, and if I'm going to do that it will not be with Square.

Adding another vote to this. Still not available, still needed. If the name is that deeply tied into the database that it cannot be changed easily, then abandon that route and find the next compromise. Add a "Display Name" field and edit things to show the display name instead of the apparently immutable account owner name if/when it is set.

I know "edit things" is a very broad and very large task, but at this point something needs to be done.

It is quite crazy that I could change it with EVERY single thing except square…

I think it is absolutely ridiculous we as the account business owners cannot change our names without going thru flaming hoops to merge accounts, make new ones etc. Its a simple name change. I have been divorced since the creation of my account and switched my last name back to my maiden name. The US Government issued me a new Drivers license and Social Security card. Yet square is saying "due to company security policy" they cannot let us change our names. This should be ILLEGAL. If my last name as the business owner no longer legally belongs to me, then why wouldn't square want to also allow me to change it. Without inconveniencing me? Do better
