Merging Items

I'd like to see a feature to merge items. I could see one iteration of this – possibly the most simple one – is just to merge two or more items together into one item with no variations (technically there's one variation, but you know what I mean). You'd have to select which item you'll keep the price, SKU, unit cost, etc., and then the stock gets added together. If Item A has 2 stock and Item B has 3 stock, you merge Item B into Item A then the total stock becomes 5 while keeping all the other information from Item A intact. 

A more complex version of merging could have each of the old items become a variation under a new item, with each variation keeping the stock count, unit cost, etc. of the old item. 

Here's my use case: 

The business owner often creates duplicates of items when she makes purchase orders. It's a bit maddening, but don't tell her that I said that!

I usually notice this when I receive a purchase order and see that there are items without SKUs; that indicates that she didn't use the existing item which would have an SKU. In most cases I mark the item as not received and then go into the existing item and receive the stock there. I then have to delete the accidental item. 

It would be much easier for me to just receive the entire purchase order and then merge the new item into the existing item.

Love this idea! We sometimes get duplicate items because of the same problem you have! Someone doesn't realize that there is already an item made and makes a new one! Also recently we are rearranging some of our items and I found that I wanted to take several existing items and merge them to be variations of one single item. This feature would have made that job so much easier!

I first started noticing comments around merging items a few years back. Not having encountered the need for such a feature on my own, I didn't watch too closely but attempted to keep up withe comments, few as they have been. 

I've been consulting with other Square users, helping them integrate subscription solutions into their businesses and using Square to grow. Yesterday one of these businesses mentioned a desire to merge items. While there are many reasons to merge or split items over time this does seem like an obvious tool that would be useful to many sellers if available. 

In his case, he opened an item, renamed it, and saved it. This created a branch, a new item tracked with new sales history and inventory. It would benefit him greatly to be able to see a merged item with historical info as he makes decisions on inventory items in the future.

I'll add our business' vote to make this happen. We're a new customer coming from QuickBooks (since they sunset their POS), small business for 56 years, and we're discovering duplicate items in the inventory, or items that had an entry for every single size of a product... and as we're correcting the issues, it's frustrating to choose between accuracy and item history.

I have to say, we do appreciate some of the other changes we've seen since coming on board; I'd just really love to see this change, too. Small businesses live and die by numbers, and having to tie up unnecessary time AND losing data to this isn't building good feelings.

Hoping this feature request becomes a reality. Like @londontea we have team members who do not put the Vendor Code in the system when creating Purchase Orders. This leads to duplicate item creation. 

Sometimes an item would be better displayed on the online store if it's one item with many variations. Sometimes it's vice versa. Being able to merge and separate items easily would save us a lot of time. 

I know some sellers have recommended doing this through exporting item library and reimporting with adjusted names, but I also find overwriting the item library scary.

Any updates on this feature request to merge duplicate items? My Square is integrated with Faire and it often creates a duplicate when a vendor changes a detail on their end. It would be super helpful if we could identify and duplicate items more easily.
