Legal Name Changes for ownership

Y'all....it is 2024. I have just navigated the DMV and SSA with court documents and have changed my license and social security card. Square is a bank. Banks change information given by identity and court order. Keep up. It is ridiculous that I can change my payroll name only and not the name on my account. My business is an S-corp so it isn't impacting business info but my team name cannot be updated. I don't want the drama and potential loss of features from participating in the Super Sellers nor the headache of transfer from me to me .... Surely y'all have the ability to process these changes...I tried to reply to an older thread but it has been archived. Filing this under anti-LGBTQ and specifically anti-trans business practices.

From what other users say all info doesn't transfer and also causes headaches with reporting, web, etc and the fact that you are referencing above a contact of support for payroll users is indicative of that fact..... Also as a fintech company - just like my bank, credit cards, etc - a name change is something that should be able to be changed on the back end.

@LaurenSQ the transfer isn't the best option. The best option is for Square to work this out. Also all account types are not eligible - s-corps for example...

@LaurenSQ this was changed for me by Square because my account was not eligible and I was not able to reconcile payroll and also being paid in my new name - at first my team name was my old name and we couldn't add a new me to the system with all of the same information.

It would be as simple as adding an edit button that triggered an upload and review request with a secure portal for uploading the change documentation. I am not saying the process was easy everywhere - I am 9 months into it and still can't get my health insurance changed even though I have changed my name with SSA, IRS, DDS, all forms of banking, social accounts, driver's license, etc.

What I am saying though is that the ease to make the change is a choice. One Square should be leaning into - not away from. Live Oak bank for example let me do this in a chat with a secure upload link and instant review of documents. Chase was a problem and require mailed documents and a long waiting period. Discover was super easy - and allowed an upload and 24 hour turnaround to review the documents. Square did eventually set up an email address for me to send documents to but the account isn't 100% changed and a business owner shouldn't have to face problems or downtime to make these changes.

Since I started my Square account: I've gotten divorced, remarried, and become a US Citizen. Getting my name changed with local & state goverments, tax authorities, banks, and 2 different national goverments is just normal course of business. On the other hand, I can't log in to my own business software without seeing my ex-husband's last name all over the place. You give us the option of changing our externally facing display name, but Shifts, Appointments, etc... insist on using a name that is not legally mine throughout the interface that my employees use every day.

...not to mention deposits...mine still have my old name. I have yet to hear a reason why I can change my name on everything from personal to business credit cards and accounts and DDS, IRS, SSA but not Square...

Hello @MudFire_Dex,  @anniemcg@AKeith, and @sugarlab. Thank you for taking the time to come to the community and share your request. We know it has been frustrating for sellers to be unable to edit their name on their accounts, and we have definitely heard you. I am glad to say that this is functionality that is currently in development, which I confirmed just last week. I don't have an exact date yet, but you can get the most current product release info by subscribing to our Product Updates Blog. Thanks again for writing!

@kristen BIG HAPPY DANCE OVER HERE!

@kristen That's great news, thank you.

Sweet.  I've been following this idea, though I didn't weigh in other than upvoting it.  It definitely seems like something that must be done, especially as I've see other threads with the same subject.  I will add now, though, that once this is implemented it needs a special email blast to everyone because I'm sure there are many sellers that have suffered in silence on this subject.

Wahoo! I'll do a big happy dance when I can get my maiden name off. Bad blood with that side of the family. HAHA.
