Using Codes at in-person front desk

I see that we can offer discount offer "codes" in emails which I have gotten from other businesses as I have been a customer. Does square just fake it and give you one code or do they send out individual codes to customers.  I want to know how my staff will enter this code to make sure it is only used once.
