Was refunded as store credit

I paid for a service that I never received and the merchant refunded as a return of goods. This was a couple of weeks ago. I received a receipt from Square saying that I now have store credit. Who do I have this store credit with? The merchant or with Square? Merchant says they don't have the money and I obviously don't. What do I do? The only thing I can think of is to clawback the money via my bank by asking them for a reversal. Thanks!

Square doesn't currently offer the ability to offer store credits, the business could have offered you to refund of the funds via a gift card, however. This gift card would be for this particular business. When you locate the receipt you received, can you see the refund and timestamp of when the refund was issued? I'll keep an eye out for your reply.
