Bulk update category via import

I am uploading my inventory to square via bulk upload. In the import excel when I am adding "Reporting category" or "category" to the items and uploading to square, it is still showing those items as "uncategorised".

When I am trying to bulk edit the items in square online, there is no option to assign categories in bulk, unless I assign one by one to each item. I cannot use the one by one assigning option because I have 100s of products I want to upload.

I’ve tried to replicate the issue you’ve described with the Item Import tool, but didn’t experience any issue when editing the Category field against the Items on my exported sheet. All the category updates I made were reflected in my Item Library after the upload.


With regards to adding Items to specific Categories in bulk on your Square Online Dashboard. Rather than editing the Category within the Item itself, you can visit the Category tab of your Dashboard and select multiple items from your Library at once.

While the option above is useful, with a large inventory it’s important that you’re able to quickly edit your category preferences using the import tool. If no errors were flagged when you imported the updated file, and you’ve already reviewed the standard troubleshooting, I’d recommend that you reach out to our support team as they can review the file and help to identify any potential issues.

Hey! I'm assuming you've figured it out, but I just ran into this issue, it seems like you're able to put the category name on the excel sheet, but you have to input them into categories on their own. When doing the categories, search the exact name you used for the category on the excel sheet, and all of those item names should appear, making it a little bit easier overall. I do hope you figured it out faster than I did! Have a wonderful day 🙂
