every time I try to open a square savings it says my personal info is incorrect even though everything is correct. When I called square support they just say there is nothing they can do as it’s all run through a third party? I’m super frustrated and been a square customer for a really long time and would love to take advantage of this cool feature. Any help appreciated!
Hi @Catersxoxo3. Speaking from experience assisting other sellers with issues like this, there are a couple of problems that could be yours. In order to open a Square Savings account, Square is required by Federal Law (the Patriot Act) to verify our eligibility to open an FDIC-insured bank account, which is what our savings accounts are. This means that a request is sent to the IRS and/or the SSA to verify business EINs and/or business owners’ social security numbers. If either of those is rejected by the IRS or SSA, then it’s game over for now.
As of the last time I checked, Square can not attempt to verify the information again once it has been rejected. This means that multiple attempts to verify the same information that was already rejected aren’t even considered by SSA or IRS. They just immediately reject it. However, it is my understanding that Square is trying to leverage the information that third party identity verification companies have to get around this limitation. I’ve not seen an announcement that this process is complete, so my guess is that it is still ongoing.
In the meantime, it would be wise to verify all of your personal and company information on your Square account. Be sure that your SSN is correct and that it matches your name with the Social Security Administration EXACTLY. If the SSA has you card as assigned to someone named “First Middle Last” then an attempt to verify “First Last” would fail as it is not an exact match to what they have on file. One common reason this check fails happens when people change their name (like when they get married) and forget to change it with the SSA. This causes a mismatch and SSA will reject Square’s request.
Also, make sure that your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is correct on your Square account, and that it matches the EXACT name (spelling, punctuation, too) of your company as registered with your state.
I wish I could help you more, but for now I’m pretty sure that you will have to wait. Hopefully Square can find a solution soon for those who were initially rejected by the IRS/SSA and are now in limbo.
Best of luck,
I have the same issue! And was told no one can help me. I have been a Sqaure customer for some time and I really could use this service. It is enough of an issue that it could cause me to switch platforms.
How can I check my my info on my dashboard to make sure it is all correct?
we are having this exact same issue. we are going to have to move to a different banking solution. I assume there hasn't been an update?
@MPDC Sorry to hear this. I’ve seen no announcements of a change in identity verification, so I assume that Square is still using a third-part to accomplish this task. Unless something unannounced has happened, I assume that once a seller has been rejected by IRS/SSA once through the identity verification process, then they would be locked out or Square Savings still.
Just throwing this out there. Have you looked into using your bricks-and-mortar bank’s tools to automatically save a certain amount each day? I know that this isn’t the same as automatic savings of each transaction, as Square does. But at least it could be an option/work-around right now to allow you to start on your goal of saving. Also, it would be less of a hassle to just add this rather than go to the time and expense and trouble of completely switching POS providers.
Just a thought.
Hey, sorry – I wasn't saying we would switch POS systems. I meant we would have to switch to a different banking solution. We already use Square for checking and would prefer to use Square, and only Square, for banking as opposed to a brick and mortar bank and had recently closed out our other bank accounts to do this. But we want to have our checking and savings account all at the same bank.
