Hey lovely! Congrats on getting your website up — that’s a huge step! 🎉

Yes, even on the free Square plan, you can set up a made-to-order item with different size and color options. Here’s how:

🛍Go to your Item settings, then:

  1. Click on your item (or create a new one).

  2. Scroll to “Variations” — this is where you can add different sizes (S, M, L, etc.) and set different prices if needed.

  3. Under “Item Options,” you can add things like “Color” so customers can choose from a dropdown or write their own in a custom text field (you'll use the “modifier” section for that part).

💡Tip: If you want people to type in a specific color or note, you can use a “Text Modifier” like “Enter your preferred color here.”

This setup works great for made-to-order products! If you ever upgrade your plan later, there are even more advanced options — but you can definitely start customizing with what you’ve got now 💪

I have an add on question to the one that Zenscreations asked . . . I have set up my item with a few variations . . .  for example I am setting up my 2x4 Wood Christmas trees that I sell in 2 feet, 3 feet, and 4 foot sizes.  I also offer them stained and unstained.  So far I understand how to set that up.  I also want to set up an option that they can pick a wreath.  I have 5 different wreath options, but limited supply of all of them, so I want to track my inventory.   The only way I can see to do this is to sell the tree without a wreath and sell the wreaths separately.  Is there another way to do this, that I can not figure out?

Hi @kimscrafthut As of now there is no inventory tracking of modifiers. Some workarounds people have used is to add the modifiers as individual items so that they can track inventory and have it as a modifier for the main items. For example, a restaurant might have a bacon item that is only sold as a modifier on a sandwich.

Square offers a modifier sales report ( Square Dashboard > Reports > Sales > Modifier sales) you can use to track the sales of modifiers. I think since you mentioned you have a limited quantity of the wreaths, it might be fine to just manually update the inventory from the data in the sales report. If it was a larger amount of items exporting to a spreadsheet, updating the spreadsheet and then importing might make more sense.
