I got the receipt for something my friend purchased who doesn't even know my details. How??

Hello, my friend had purchased something with contactless payment on her card in a different country to where I live and for some reason I received a receipt for her purchase from square.

Keep in mind that this person does not even know my email and we only know each other for a short period of time. This has left both of us confused. How is it possible that this happened? How did her paying for something with apple pay and not putting my details as she doesn't even know them, lead to me receiving a receipt for her purchase?

Hi there @youngmonaco 👋,

Adding on to what @Donnie-M has shared, when a customer uses a payment card for the first time at a Square seller, they are asked at the point of sale to enter their email address if they want to receive an email receipt.

At this point, the email is attached to that credit card – and going forward – a receipt is automatically sent to that email when the credit card is used at any Square seller.

If an email address or phone number is entered incorrectly, the receipt may be sent to the wrong recipient. If the last four digits of the credit card at the bottom of the receipt do not match yours, your card was not charged, but your email address or phone number was entered for receipt delivery.

To unlink your email address, click Not your receipt? on the bottom of the receipt you received. If this is the first receipt you receive from Square, you’ll also see a Don’t Recognize This Charge? link at the top of the receipt. Both will unlink your email address from the payment card so that you won’t mistakenly receive receipts meant for someone else.

If you received an accidental receipt via SMS or can’t find this link, please reach out to our Support Team for assistance in unlinking your details from the payment card. You can reach them at 1-855-700-6000, Monday to Friday, from 6 AM to 6 PM Pacific Time. Alternatively, you can get in touch with our Messaging and Email Support Teams here: squ.re/contactsqsupport.

Should you run into any issues reaching out to our team, or have any further questions, please don't hesitate to let us know. 🙂

@youngmonaco Your email/phone number was used at some point at a square merchant and associated with that payment method.  This does happen from time to time and at some point more than likely you put in your info and she paid or vice versa.  You can click the link on the receipt and follow the steps to get your information disassociated from her payment method.  Square merchants do not get your info unless you do business with that merchant.  But if you do business at one merchant and enter your customer info or contact info, it will be available to any square merchant you shop with.
