How do I create a subdomain with the domain I bought from Weebly?

[Note: The title of this thread has been updated by a moderator.]

Hi - I have a domain bought in weebly and hosted in weebly. (www.cemccp.com) How do I create a subdomain (done this in many other hosts) to be something like www.subdomain.cemcpp.com

I have searched the community and there are several references to external domains, free weebly and so on, but not my query. Any help appreciated Smiley Happy Thanks.

Hi there!

This is actually a simple task to accomplish.

After logging in to Weebly, click the Domains tab, then click the domain. In the center of the page you will see DNS RECORDS. Click EDIT.

Now, click +Add Record, and select "A Record" from the "Type" drop down. The "Host" will be the subdomain you want, and the "Points To" is the IP Address which you can copy from your other A Records. Now click Save.

Once you have created the subdomain, it can take up to 24-48 hours for the DNS change to propagate.

I've read this thread but I'm still confused. It's late in the day here and my head's starting to hurt.  Please bear with me. I apologize if this has been answered already but I have a question:

I work for an institute that has its own domain (myinstitute.com) hosted by Drupal. I head a department and can hava and control my own departmental website. I hate Drupal and would much rather use Weebly. Is it possible to have a subdomain hosted by Weebly (mydepartment.myinstitute.com) even though the primary domain is run by Drupal?

Hi @Siggi This should be possible, although, it would depend on your domain registrar or host. As long as you are able to create a subdomain, you can redirect just the subdomain to a Weebly site. Please keep in mind that you would need to have a paid hosting plan on the Weebly site.

Hi @Bernadette . That's great news. We already have a paid Weebly hosting plan (myinstitute.org) that I would like to change to a subdomain of the institute I work for (mydepartment.myinstitute.com). Policy dictates that everything must be under the same umbrella so me having a seperate .org domain for my department is frowned upon. Hence I'm either being dragged kicking and screaming into Drupal or I can have my own subdomain on Weebly. I'd muuuch rather do that if that's technically possible.

How do I go about changing my current domain on my paid Weebly plan to reflect a subdomain as I have outlined above? Can you advise me?

Hi Siggi. I vaguely remember Drupal, but it's been quite awhile. Smiley Happy If you log into the editor for your site and click Settings, you can edit the site address to the subdomain. Just include the full url and save. When editing the dns, you should be able to point to the site specific IP address you'll see when you edit the site address in Weebly. Smiley Happy

I'm trying to create a subdomain so we can clean up our main site (museumonmain.org) a little by moving certain content over to a secondary site, but the current interface doesn't seem to match the instructions at the beginning of this thread. In particular, the domains page (from the menu found under our user name) just gives me the options "register a domain" and "transfer a domain" and I can't see where I would go to edit or add DNS records. Can someone point me in the right direction?

My end goal is to create subsidiary sites for particular exhibits and programming, so that the two dozen or so pages of our "What In the World?" exhibit are on whatintheworld.museumonmain.org and not cluttering up the main museumonmain.org directory when we're trying to update the main site.

Hi, @MuseumOnMain.

Do you see a link on the popup to "connect or transfer a domain you already own"? Clicking on that should let you enter a subdomain of your custom domain name.

Hi! I am running a similar project - I've set up a subdomain via the DNS - however, on the step of assinging it to one of the new weebly sites I've made for it - it asks me to set up a new payment plan?

Is that necessary for a subdomain? The main domain is already hosted through Weebly

Thank you!

From the dashboard menu (drop-down under our name) I see a link for "Domain."

That takes me to the Domains page, which offers me two options: "Register a Domain," and "Transfer a Domain." The second option prompts me to enter a domain name to be transferred.

Is that where I should enter the subdomain name? Because I tried use that prompt to create a subdomain "WhatintheWorld.museumonmain.org" and the widget autocorrected my entry to remove the dot after "WhatintheWorld" and wouldn't let me edit the www out of the sample text.

OK, after persuing another thread I think I get it: Having a single custom domain on a paid plan does not entitle us to free custom subdomains; any custom subdomains (such as "subdomain.museumonmain.org") require their own separate upgrades, because a custom subdomain is an upgrade and each website has to pay for upgrades separately.

So if we want to create spinoff websites under our existing account, without paying for custom subdomains, what are the naming conventions? Because I'm not that iconcerned about diluting our branding or anything like that; this is mostly about making site maintenance more manageable.

Hi @MuseumOnMain Yes, that is mostly correct. There isn't a cost to create the subdomain itself through the domain DNS page. The cost is incurred when you try to connect the subdomain to its own separate site.

If you want to create a separate site for free you would need to assign the site to a Weebly subdomain.

I own a domain that is hosted by Weebly and I have a website set up on Weebly. I'm looking to add a subdomain that will link to an external site which will be masked as my subdomain. I don't need a website for the subdomain. Weebly chat support is telling me I need to purchase the subdomain even though I already own the domain. But from what I'm reading here, it seems that I can just create the subdomain in the DNS records of my main domain. Is that correct? If so, can you please walk me through how to do that? I've read through this thread and I'm still confused Smiley Sad
