How do I turn off sales tax collection?

There used to be a button when you created an item (or edited it) that allowed you to control whether or not sales tax was collected on that specific item.

It appears that button has been removed, or I cannot locate it.

We sell multiple products on our web store that sales tax should not be collected on.

How do I fix this?

Hi, @departedsoles !

There did used to be a button where you could toggle off whether or not sales tax should be collected on specific items. That has changed a bit.

To control sales tax on specific items, you’ll want to check how your tax rules are set up and which items they’re applied to. Here’s how you can adjust it:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard.

  2. Go to Items & Orders > Items and find the item you want to update.

  3. Click Edit Item, then scroll to the Variations section.

  4. Make sure your item is assigned to the correct Tax Category or check if a manual tax is applied.

  5. Next, go to Account & Settings > Business > Sales Taxes and check each tax rule you have set up.

  6. For each tax, click it to edit, then adjust which items or categories the tax applies to. You may need to remove the item from a taxable group or create a special tax rule for non-taxable items.

If you want to make an item always non-taxable, just ensure it’s not tied to any active tax in your settings.

I hope this helps!
