The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Picking Appropriate Taxes for International Customers
I'm hoping to use Square Payment Links to handle online payments for our web-based store. We're going to be selling digital goods internationally.
One challenge is local taxes. Most of your larger online stores are now charging local taxes where appropriate (for example, Steam will charge GST in Australia and VAT in the UK).
From what support has told me, Square offers nothing in that regard - you have assign a location when you create your Payment Link. This of course happens before the user enters their address into the payment page.
I know I could try IP geo-location or simply asking what region of the world the customer is from before starting the payment flow, but that's quite awkward. I'd really love some kind of technique to automatically adjust the Location or Sales Tax listings for an order based on the address the user enters.
There's nothing like this in the Square APIs?

Thanks for your question, @OptrixAU!
Currently, in Australia, it's not possible to charge online sales taxes based on a location entered by the customer. I think this would be a great feature to have though! I encourage you to visit our Ideate Board to see if a similar Feature Request already exists. If not, please feel free to submit your own and detail how this would positively impact your business.
For more information and discussions related to APIs, I recommend visiting the Square Developer Forum. Our developers are active there and would be happy to address any questions you may have.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help here. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! ๐
