Square Register - Customer Display Stays On After Update

I'm surprised this hasn't been noticed by anyone else and it might be a bug in the Square Register update routine.

We have the displays set to timeout after 5 minutes. That works under normal circumstances throughout the day. Both the register and customer display go off as expected.

However, when we come into the store in the morning, the customer display is on. The main register display is off and only the customer display is on. It appears after the nightly update that the display turns on after a reboot and never turns off until we touch the register display to start the timeout. So, I'm assuming it's been on for 4 to 5 hours or more after the update.

The customer display being on after an update defeats the purpose of it turning off after 5 minutes. And has the potential for being on for more than 24 hours on Sundays when we aren't open.

If it matters, we do turn off the receipt printer when we close at the end of the day. There's no sense in leaving that turned on when it's not going to be used.

Hi @HeatherM!

This is a strange issue and one that we haven't gotten any other reports on yet.

This could potentially be a small bug that we'd need to file for or the system might need a reboot. Have you tried to reboot everything to see if it resolves it yet? Sounds silly but sometimes that's all it needs.

On Saturday I went into the system settings and found there was an update that hadn't been applied for some reason. I manually applied it to see if it would correct a problem I was having with receipts and it did.

Evidently it also corrected this problem at the same time because when I stopped in yesterday morning to check it, the customer display wasn't on. I was waiting until today to confirm the problem was actually solved with that update and not because I stopped in on Sunday far later than I do on weekdays.

So, it appears this problem was fixed with that update.

@HeatherM Oh okay that's great!

It sounds like it was just a little buggy but I'm glad the update fixed it.

Unfortunately the problem is back.

I first noticed it again with the release of 3.12.0049 and again when I came in this morning after the system automatically updated to 3.14.0044.

To re-state the problem, the customer display stays on after the upgrade takes place. It should turn off the same as the main display.

To be a bit clearer, the display works normally throughout the day. It's only after the system automatically updates at 3:00am that the customer display remains on after the update and until someone touches the main screen to reset the timer that turns off the customer display.

So what you end up with is this:

1) Customer display is working normally for days without a problem.

2) At 3:00am the system automatically updates.

3) At 7 or 8:00am I come in and the customer display is on (main screen is off).

4) I have to touch the main screen so both displays will turn off as normally happens after 5 minutes.
