Issues connecting Square handheld to mobile hotspot

Hey all

I recently got the Square Handheld and I tried connecting my device to my mobile hotspot (I have a mobile business). It connects fine but i have no internet. I get a wifi symbol with an exclamation point in the wifi symbol. I've tested my phone's hotspot with other devices and they work just fine. When i do a network test on the Square handheld it says no ip address critical issues. I have tried everything i found online and what square support told me to do. Restarted the device and my phone, reset my phones network, reset the Square handheld, nothing works. It works just fine when i connect to my home wifi. Please help!

Hey @icecare, this is actually a known issue!

Right now, Square Handheld devices will not connect to certain type of networks. Our engineering team is rolling out a software update (SQUID 7.15.0073) which will fix this.

However, in order to get the update, the only thing we can advise right now is to try and connect your Handheld device to as many network as you possibly can to see which one might work. Once you're connect, tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > General > About Square Handheld > Check for Update to get the fix.

Make sure your Cell is acting like a DHCP host (Giving your handheld a IP address).

I think its with how your Cell is acting like a Hotspot and Not giving out an IP address since your Handheld works fine connecting at home to the Wifi.  Since I am unsure which cell brand your using and I do not mess with mine much, I do not know how to do this.  I did see this setting when setting mine up before.  I would google your Specific Cell and how to enable Hotspot as a DHCP host.

Good Luck.

Hey Keith

Thank you for your reply. I use Tmobile as my service provider. I’ll definitely look into that and report back!

Here is what AI says to try when setting a Cell Phone as DHCP Server:

To enable DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) on an Android phone, navigate to the Wi-Fi settings, select the desired network, and then choose DHCP under IP settings. This allows the phone to automatically obtain an IP address from the network's DHCP server.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  1. 1. Access Wi-Fi Settings:
Open your phone's Settings app and tap on "Network & internet" or "Connections," then select "Wi-Fi".
  2. 2. Select the Network:
Find and tap on the name of the Wi-Fi network you're connected to or want to connect to.
  3. 3. Modify Network Settings:
Look for an option like "Modify network," "Edit network," or similar. This might be accessed by tapping and holding the network name.
  4. 4. Change IP Settings:
Find the "IP settings" or "IP address" option. It might be under an "Advanced" section.
  5. 5. Enable DHCP:
Select "DHCP" from the dropdown menu or toggle it on. This will enable your phone to obtain an IP address automatically from the router's DHCP server.
  6. 6. Save Changes:
Tap "Save" or "Apply" to confirm the changes.
  7. 7. Verify Connection:
After enabling DHCP, the phone should automatically connect to the network and obtain an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server from the DHCP server.
By enabling DHCP, your phone will automatically receive the necessary network configuration details from the router, simplifying the connection process and allowing it to access the internet.

Good luck at getting this resolved.
I am just not sure of the Wording for Android, Iphone etc Brands to get to this setting.  The cell provider T-Mobile in your case should be able to get you to this setting on your device.

So I did more research and apparently on iPhones the DHCP is automatically assigned and you cannot mess with it. Back to square one lol

Well that’s good news! The device connects to home WiFi’s without issues it’s only the mobile hotspots that it doesn’t work with. Any idea approximately when the update will roll out?

According the latest update I received from the team, they are planning to roll out the update today. Hopefully you'll see it by the end of the day, or tomorrow's morning at the latest.

I'm keeping an eye out too so if there's any delay in rolling out the fix, I'll share an update here @icecare!
