Does Square have a Limit on Processing amounts at a POS?

So today I had a customer from out of the country try to Tap their card for $105.00 give or take.... It was declined.  No issue I told him since he is traveling it was probably blocked by his bank as a safety measure.  Call the bank and see what the issue is.  While on the phone he inserted the Chip and then the card was processed.  His bank informed him that some stores or Processors put amount limits on the Type of Payments such as a $100 limit on taps.

So out of curiosity I am wondering if Square has any limits like this.  Since 2019 I have never run into this and think customers have tapped for higher amounts.   I think this was an action by his bank and Not square but just made me wonder.   The customer said this has happened before in Canada to him with limits of $50 Canadian at one store where he could not tap but was able to Dip the card.

In this instance NOW that I know that there could be a limit on a Tap, I know if the card is declined for Tapping it might go through dipped for some travelers.

Any idea if Square has Limits like this for Taps or International users here in the States?

Thanks in advance

Hey there @Candlestore - Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community to bring this to our attention. I'm sorry to hear that you and your customer ran into this issue today.

When using Square, there is a $50,000 per transaction limit. The same will apply to tap payments as well. From what you've described, it sounds more like this could have been related to the customer traveling. I wonder if their bank may have pushed through the approval while the customer was on the phone with them since the payment was able to be accepted all of a sudden 🤔

Since we can't look at the exact reason for this specific payment's decline over the Seller Community (you'd have to contact our Support Team for that), I recommend looking over some common reasons for payment declines here in our Support Center.

I hope this information is helpful but please do let me know if you have any additional questions.

@_Violet ,

I knew Square had the $50,000 per transaction limit, I just did not know if there was also a limit on Tap to Pay.

From what your saying it sounds like the Bank Enabled the card and push the denial on Square.  I am not curious enough to call Support to see what the issue was; but just curious enough to see if there were limits like that here from Square since it was brought to my attention that limits like that for Tap to pay are present in other countries.  Thank you for letting me know that Square only has the $50,000 limit per transaction.
