I bought my square terminal in October of 2021, today is February 10, 2022.

My terminal does not stay on, unless it is plugged in. Is it broken? Is it faulty?

We recently started using a terminal device and have noticed a few quirks in the charging. First, be sure the lightning bolt comes on when you plug the cord in. We noticed ours was getting power but the bolt didn't show. So, when we unplugged it powered down. After some messing around it appeared to be some lint or dust keeping the cord from making a solid connection. We used an air can to blow out the connection and cord, no problems since. Might not be your problem but, worth mentioning.
