How do I use the Square Terminal without my phone?

This is my first time using a Square Terminal.  I linked it to my account.  I am able to use the Square app on my phone for check out, but I was under the impression the Square Terminal could be used independently of my phone.  When I go to Checkout on the Terminal, I get a screen that says "Powered by Square" and nothing else.  I can't enter in order info or anything on the Terminal.

I can however put order information on the app in my phone and select the Terminal as a checkout option and it pulls up the info on the Terminal screen.

Is it possible to use the Terminal alone?  I got this so I wouldn't have to use my phone since I can't swipe cards on my phone.

Wow, I fixed it.  The problem is using a device code to log in.  Apparently this doesn't log you in but instead connects the device to the other device.  Very dumb.  If I sign in using my email and password, I get the normal Square experience on the Terminal.
